Yikes! Look at the date! Your “days ‘til Christmas” are sorely lacking. Thankfully, Duluth has plenty of places for you to pick up those last-minute gifts and supplies.

Miller Hill Mall

With more than 100 retailers, services and eateries you’re sure to be in overwhelm when you visit Miller Hill Mall but, hey, ‘tis the season for overwhelm, right?

There were some changes to the mall in 2015 with Wet Seal and Deb closing, rue 21 and Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches opening and Victoria’s Secret, Tradehome Shoes and American Eagle Outfitters remodeling.

Here’s what we suggest when it comes to last-minute gifts:

  • Legacy Toys for the little ones
  • Claire’s for Tweens
  • Aeropostale or Hot Topic for teenagers
  • Helzberg Diamonds, Kay’s

This month salutes Lakewood Elementary, one of nine elementary schools administered by Duluth Public Schools, ISD 709. The school serves nearly 300 students in grades K through 5 with 11 full-time teachers.


Lakewood’s curriculum includes 90 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of writing instruction every day. In addition, students spend 90 minutes on math (grades 2 through 5) and they are instructed in science and social studies daily.

In addition to this core curriculum, Lakewood offers advanced opportunities for gifted students and an after-school program until 6:00 p.m., a boon for working parents.

Everybody gets so busy planning for the December holidays that they seem to forget that huge celebration we have on the last day of the month. Yup, New Year’s Eve sneaks up on a lot of us so we’ve decided to do something about it.

While the following list in no way covers everything going on in our amazing Duluth, it should be good enough to help you get started making your plans.

Head over the bridge

Have an amazing celebration and support a worthy cause at Behind the Mask, a New Year’s Eve Gala at Barker’s Island Inn in Superior. The fun starts at 7 p.m. and you’ll enjoy live music, hors d’ oeuvres, a silent auction, champagne toast and more.

A Christmas Carol

Wise Fool Shakespeare is presenting their original adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic at Teatro Zuccome Performing Arts Theatre.
