Sure, we’re almost a week into 2015 but the start of a new year is always a good time to take a look back at where we were last year.
We were, well – number one last year, at least according to Outside magazine. Duluth was ranked at the top of the magazine’s “The 16 Best Places to Live in the U.S.: 2014.”
What goes into becoming America’s best town to live? According to Outside’s editors it takes “Access to adventure, healthy eating options, bike lanes, and green spaces.” Duluth has all of those – and so much more.
They go on to add that they also consider the “number of outfitters, miles of trails, and number of bike shops—plus considerations like unemployment rates, median incomes.”
There were 1.5 million votes for this award, so Duluthians should be quite proud. Of the total votes, our city received 221,350. We did so well, in fact, that the editors claimed Duluth “absolutely crushed every voting round.”
So, what do all these hundreds of thousands of people like about our city? How about our
- 6,834 acres of city parkland
- 178 miles of wooded trails
- 16 designated trout streams
- The fact that Duluth has produced more than 150 Olympians
- Spirit Mountain
- The Duluth Traverse
- Superior Hiking Trail
- Vikre Distillery
- Bent Paddle Brewing Company
and more. In fact, the editors’ accolades for Duluth are almost embarrassing. Well-deserved, though, I might add.
“The city’s entrepreneurial spirit and love of wilderness” is what cinched it for us, according to the magazine.
Here are the rest of the top 5 cities
2. Provo, Utah (they were number one last year)
3. Minneapolis, MN
4. Anchorage, AK
5. Ithaca, NY
The list included 16 cities. In case you’re wondering, number 16 is Montpelier, Vermont.
