This month DuluthRealEstate.com salutes Lakewood Elementary, one of nine elementary schools administered by Duluth Public Schools, ISD 709. The school serves nearly 300 students in grades K through 5 with 11 full-time teachers.
Lakewood’s curriculum includes 90 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of writing instruction every day. In addition, students spend 90 minutes on math (grades 2 through 5) and they are instructed in science and social studies daily.
In addition to this core curriculum, Lakewood offers advanced opportunities for gifted students and an after-school program until 6:00 p.m., a boon for working parents.
Test Scores and Rankings
While Lakewood’s 3rd and 4th graders struggle with the state’s standardized tests, by the time they reach the 5th grade they get the hang of it and excel. In fact, in 2015, 73.2 percent of Lakewood’s 5th graders met or exceeded the math standards on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment exams (MCA III) while only 64.6 percent of the district’s and 59.7 percent of the state’s did the same. Lakewood’s 5th graders bested the district and the state in reading and science as well, with their strongest performance in the latter.
