This Week’s Events in Duluth

Posted by Kris Lindahl on Monday, January 19th, 2015 at 12:06pm.

As usual, there is a lot going on in our fair city this week. I picked a few things I thought might be of interest to you.

Free Radon Testing Kits

Radon, an odorless, colorless radioactive gas, is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. It seeps into our homes through the cracks in the foundation and can build to unhealthy levels.

The U.S. EPA has named January the month to test the air in your home and to help Duluthians do that, the American Lung Association is offering a limited number of FREE testing kits at several Duluth locations.

If there are still some available, you can pick up a testing kit at the following Duluth locations:

  •        American Red Cross, 2524 Maple Grove Road in the Miller Hill Mall Area
  •        American Lung Association, in the Ordean Building, downtown.
  •        1Roof, 3826 W 4th Street  in Central Hillside
  •        Marshall Hardware,  4415 E Superior Street, Lakeside Lester Park
  •        Caring Ways Cancer Resource Center, First Street Building
  •        Ecolibrium3, 2304 W. Superior Street in Lincoln Park

FREE Antique Appraisal

It’s Duluth’s very own Antiques Road Show! Join the county’s Historical Society on Wednesday, Jan 21st from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center. Bring anything you suspect to be an antique with you for a free appraisal of its value. You are allowed two free appraisals.

You can also bring a photo of the item if it’s too large or fragile to hand-carry to the event. Make sure the photo is clear.

The center is located at 506 West Michigan Street. Call them with questions: 218-733-7568.

Tour the Brewery, Sample the Beer

If you love craft beer, make plans to join other enthusiasts on Thursday evening, Jan 22nd from 5:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. for Thirsty Thursday Brewery Tour. You’ll visit Thirsty Pagan, Lake Superior Brewing Company and Bent Paddle Brewing Company.

They’ll be stopping for pizza along the way and your $79 ticket includes that and transportation, snacks and a souvenir tasting glass. Call the Duluth Experience for more information. 218- 464-6337

Willy Wonka Jr.

We wrap up this week’s events in Duluth with something for the kids, from the Duluth Playhouse Children’s Theatre. From January 22nd through January 25th (Sunday) take them to Marshall School’s Fregeau Auditorium to catch Roald Dahl's “Willy Wonka Jr.”

Show times are 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday; 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $12 and $15. Call 218-733-7555 for more information.
